Description
Cryptocoryne Wendtii Red
Cryptocoryne wendtii ‘Red’ is a classic Sri Lankan crypt that brings warm, earthy color and gently wavy leaves to the foreground and midground of planted aquariums. Depending on light, nutrients, and tank conditions, its foliage can range from olive green to brown, coppery tones, and deep reddish hues—often with several colors visible on the same plant.
Cryptocoryne Wendtii Red Overview
In the aquarium, C. wendtii ‘Red’ forms a compact rosette of lance-shaped, slightly crinkled leaves. As it matures, it spreads slowly by runners, forming attractive clumps that fill in around rocks, wood, and other plants without becoming overwhelming. In a planted layout, it is especially appreciated for:
- Rich, varied coloration: Leaves can appear brown, red, or olive green depending on light and nutrition, adding warm tones and subtle color variation that contrasts beautifully with bright green stems and grasses.
- Versatile placement and structure: Its modest height and rosette growth habit make it ideal for the foreground to midground, as a border in front of taller plants, or as a soft “foot” around aquascaping features like Ohko Dragon Rock or driftwood.
- Shade-tolerant and low-light friendly: Unlike many demanding plants, C. wendtii ‘Red’ thrives in low to moderate light and even in shaded areas beneath taller plants or hardscape, making it perfect for filling dim corners and undergrowth where fussier species often struggle.
- Shelter and stability for tank inhabitants: Dense clumps create excellent cover and line-of-sight breaks for shy fish and bottom dwellers, while the strong root system helps stabilize the substrate and take up nutrients, contributing to a more balanced aquarium.
Grouped together, Cryptocoryne wendtii ‘Red’ can form a low, gently undulating “crypt garden” that looks especially natural when nestled between rocks or at the base of wood. It pairs wonderfully with other crypts (like C. parva or C. lucens), foreground plants such as Dwarf Sagittaria, and background species like Vallisneria or stem plants, helping bridge the visual gap between low carpets and taller plants—even in areas that don’t get much direct light.
Care Guide for Cryptocoryne Wendtii Red
Cryptocoryne wendtii ‘Red’ is one of the hardiest and most adaptable crypt species, which makes it a favorite in both beginner and advanced planted tanks. It will tolerate a wide range of water parameters and lighting levels, and does not require CO₂ injection or special equipment to thrive. In fact, it is particularly well-suited to low-light or shaded aquariums, where it will slowly but steadily fill in around taller plants and hardscape.
This plant can be grown in standard gravel or sand, but it will do much better in a loosely packed, nutrient-rich substrate such as Fluval Stratum or Rio Escuro, especially when combined with root tabs and a quality fertilizer like Thrive. Low to moderate lighting is generally sufficient; under stronger light and good nutrients, color tends to deepen and growth can be somewhat faster, but very intense light is not necessary and full, direct light is not required for it to perform well.
Like many crypts, C. wendtii ‘Red’ may experience “crypt melt” when first introduced or moved—older leaves may die back as the plant adapts to new conditions. This is normal. As long as the roots and crown are healthy and left undisturbed in the substrate, new leaves will usually emerge, often better adapted to your specific tank.
For planting, gently separate potted clumps into individual crowns and space them a short distance apart to allow each plant room to spread. Over time, runners will appear and small plantlets will form nearby; you can leave them to create a dense cluster or carefully relocate them to other areas of the tank. Remove any heavily damaged or older leaves at the base to keep the plant looking fresh. Aquascaping tools—like the tweezers and scissors in our Modern Aquarium 6-Piece Aquascaping Tool Set (9.9")—make it easier to plant and maintain crypts without disturbing their roots.
- Light: Low–Moderate (excellent in shaded or low-light areas)
- Temperature Range: 71–82°F
- Placement: Foreground–Midground (background in smaller tanks)
- CO₂: Not required
- Difficulty: Easy
- Growth Rate: Medium (can be faster in rich substrates)
Cryptocoryne wendtii ‘Red’ is also available potted, which can make initial planting easier and help the plant establish more quickly. If you enjoy this variety, explore our broader Cryptocoryne selection at Modern Aquarium for other leaf shapes and sizes—like C. parva, C. balansae, and C. lucens—to build a layered crypt theme in your aquascape, including those dimmer, shaded spots that need subtle structure and color.

C. Wendtii Red
Posted by AeXzer Anthony on 6 Oct 2021Well packed and fast shipping. I gave it 4 star because some of the leaves were dying when it arrived and those leaves melted right away after a day or two. But the remaining leaves were very healthy and now sprouting new leaves. This Crypt is very beautiful. Highly recommended to anybody who wants a plant that is not too demanding but have very beautiful characteristics and coloration. Both are already showing red coloration on their new leaves. I will still buy again with this seller.

Cryptocoryne Wendtii Red
Posted by Paul on 13 Aug 2021These are very cool plants that work well in the mid ground of my 20-gallon tank. In a week they've already grown taller and the leaves seem to be reaching toward the surface. Very nice-looking plants.
