Description
Four Leaf Clover
Four Leaf Clover Dwarf (Marsilea crenata) is a unique, low-growing carpeting plant from Australia that brings a playful, natural “meadow” look to the foreground of planted aquariums. Depending on conditions, it produces small clover-like leaves—often two to four per stem—creating a textured carpet that looks very different from typical grass-style foreground plants. As it settles in, it spreads steadily through runners and shoots, gradually filling in open areas and softening the front of your aquascape.
Four Leaf Clover Dwarf Overview
n the aquarium, Marsilea crenata forms short stems topped with small, clover-shaped leaves that can stay low and compact or grow slightly taller depending on light and nutrients. It’s a great option for aquarists who want a carpeting plant with a more “leafy” look—something that adds variety and breaks up the uniform texture of hairgrass-style lawns.
Aquarists appreciate Four Leaf Clover Dwarf for:
- Distinct clover-like leaf shape: A rare foreground texture that instantly makes the scape feel more interesting and natural.
- Carpeting growth habit: Spreads via runners and shoots to gradually fill in the foreground over time.
- Beginner-friendly adaptability: Tolerates a wide range of tank conditions and does not require CO₂ to grow.
- Great for framing hardscape: Looks especially natural when planted around aquascaping rocks and driftwood, where it creates a soft “groundcover” effect.
For aquascaping, Four Leaf Clover works beautifully as a transition plant between open sand paths and denser planted areas, or planted in patches around stone and wood to mimic a natural riverbank floor. It pairs nicely with darker hardscape and midground plants like Cryptocorynes, creating a layered layout that looks established rather than newly planted.
Disclaimer: Due to local restrictions, this plant does not ship to Louisiana.
Caring for Four Leaf Clover Dwarf
Four Leaf Clover Dwarf is an undemanding carpeting plant that does well in most community aquariums. It grows under moderate lighting and does not require CO₂ supplementation, making it a solid choice for hobbyists who want a carpeting effect without a high-tech setup. That said, like most foreground plants, it responds strongly to better conditions.
If you want Four Leaf Clover to stay more compact and spread more quickly, plant it in a nutrient-rich substrate and provide brighter light and consistent fertilization. CO₂ is optional, but in brighter, higher-energy planted tanks it can make a noticeable difference in both speed and density—helping the plant form a tighter, more “true carpet” look rather than taller stems. If you decide to add CO₂, a stable setup such as our Fully Automated CO₂ System with pH & CO₂ Controller helps keep levels consistent, which supports healthier growth and more predictable carpeting results.
For planting, separate the plant into small portions and space them out across the foreground so runners can connect and fill in naturally. Once established, occasional trimming helps maintain a tidy carpet and encourages lower, denser growth.
- Light: Moderate–High
- Temperature Range: 68–84°F
- Placement: Foreground / Carpeting
- CO₂: Not required (highly beneficial for faster, tighter carpeting)
- Difficulty: Easy
- Growth Rate: Moderate (faster with rich substrate and stable CO₂)
With patience and stable conditions, Four Leaf Clover Dwarf becomes a standout foreground plant—subtle, natural, and unlike the typical “grass lawn” carpets.

Misleading photo… Specimen looks good though
Posted by Ed on 22 May 2025I ordered two bunches and received maybe 1/3 of what is shown in the photo… so plan accordingly. The small bunch I received was healthy and clean though! Five stars for the plant, 2.5 for the tiny amount received. Won’t buy again.

Great Quality
Posted by Unknown on 6 Dec 2021It seems like the leaves are melting from just putting it in my aquarium a few days ago, but that is normal. Even after only like 3 days I think I see some new clovers poking out of the gravel. My goldfish don't seem to go after this plant much, so I will surely be buying more.
